The highlights of our 2020 journey together

December 2020

Dear Friends,

With the close of 2020 upon us, we are grateful to you, dear friends, who — even in the midst of a pandemic and uprisings across the world — have turned your attention toward the ongoing struggles of communities who suffer with every day bias and discrimination across the country and the world.

This has been an especially difficult year for the communities who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and the racist police murders that led to uprisings across the world.

Thanks to your support, we were able to hear the stories of leaders in these communities and reflect on wise and skillful actions that will support healing and transformation in our societies.

We invite you to take a look below at this year’s highlights from Making-Visible - again, all possible because of the community of our webinar attendees.

We still need your help to keep it going in 2021.

Please consider a tax-deductible end-of-year donation to Making-Visible. Your donations will help us offset costs for operations and guest speaker fees. We are a separate entity from the Opening Heart Mindfulness Community (OHMC). This year we received no financial support from any other organization, and only one small grant from OHMC.

Give what you can to allow us to continue to offer these enlightening conversations. One of our goals is to widely share the message of those who are so seldom heard and seen.

One of our attendees has recently shared why Making-Visible is meaningful to them:

"I started participating in OHMC’s Making-Visible program in order to listen and learn more about injustices, discrimination and oppression faced by vulnerable communities. The discussions, led by experts, are remarkable in their authenticity and open-heartedness. And they initiated a process of gently but persistently cracking through my barriers of ignorance and indifference and inspiring me to take action, whether by reading books, seeking out podcasts and other forms of media, sharing what I learned with friends and family, and standing up and standing strong for vulnerable communities experiencing injustice."

Have a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to continuing to learn with you in the new conversations of 2021.

warmly,
Adriana & Annie
and the Making-Visible team

Anti-Black Racism

We created this webinar series to support the unraveling of our conditioning into anti-black racism, as well as the growth of inclusive, equitable, and beloved communities. In order to do that, we emphasized the experience of people of African descent, including understanding how anti-blackness can be as overt as police killings and as subtle as unmindful speech or being passed over for a work promotion.

Webinar 2 with David Sampé.

Webinar 3 with Katie Loncke.

Special Topics
Grief and Loss in the Time of Coronavirus with Roshi Joan Halifax, Ph.D & Frank Ostaseski.
Roshi Joan and Frank are two of the most renowned leaders in the fields of grief and loss and what is more exciting is that their wisdom and teaching stems from their own deep practice of the dharma and their experiences with dying people and their loved ones. This is not a teaching based on theory.

Intentional Giving to Heal Our World with Jennifer Near & Nwamaka Agbo.
This webinar was led by two of the most experienced women in social justice philanthropy. We learned how to align our resource distribution with our values, and how to make the best use of whatever wealth we have (whether we give $10 or $10 Million) to move us towards a more just and equitable system.

Revisiting Anti-Black Racism

How to Fight Injustice without Hating with Valerie Brown.
Valerie returned to our Anti-Black Racism series at a time when we were seeking the skillful action that was required of us at a time of hate, fear, and violence.

LGBTQIA+

In this series, as a mindfulness practice community, we aimed to support the unraveling of structures and societal conditioning that negatively impact LGBTQIA+ individuals. Each conversation focused on ways to transform the inequality and discrimination that impacts us all. When we listen and center LGBTQIA+ voices, then progress can be made at the various intersections between the LGBTQIA+ community and anti-black racism, policing, sex work, labor rights, immigration discrimination, and housing rights, among many other issues.
